Hi everyone
It sure has been a long while since I last posted.
Things have been busy at my job and my private life. But it's all good!
Over the past few months I haven't spent much quality time with Sir. I have been to the rescue but regrettably I didn't do much with him. The weather has been brutal to say the least. But thankfully he had the attention of the Volunteers and of course Laurel.
I'm pretty sure that as a result of my not interacting with him much his attitude towards me changed. He really wanted nothing to do with his human.
I started paying more attention to him a couple of weekends ago. Brought him carrots and apple pieces. And generally just spent some time with him. I would talk up a storm to him about how he is the handsomest and how much I love him........etc.
And lo and behold he started to come around. This past weekend he saw me from a distance walking down the road to where his paddock is. He watched me intently all the way until I reached his paddock.
Like he used to do he lumbered over to the fence and rested his chin on my shoulder. No treats....just me; and he was okay with it! We hung out for awhile and he never left the fencing until I patted his neck and said so long!
I haven't felt that way with him or from him in awhile. I can only describe it as Sir being affectionate.
Now that the days are longer I will be able to go a few nights after work to hang with my boy.
I know that we both need that TLC.
So last night I went out after work to be there when Dr. Wen arrived to check on Sir.
I was surprised when he said that it had been almost 2 years since he began treating Sir with Chinese Medicine and some traditional heart and water pills.
He did an examination and said that Sir was doing well. His heart rate was around 50, still faster than normal, but a whole lot better since the last time when it was racing so fast that the best he could count was around 125 beats. It should be around 25-30 at a standstill.
He told Laurel to increase the medication and that would deal with the residual water due to the heart condition.
I asked if I could exercise Sir at a walk and he said absolutely. Laurel was concerned that when he is turned out he sometimes runs and gets excited. Dr. Wen said that it's nothing to worry about. Sir knows his limits. He also commented that he was surprised that Sir was still around.
I thought to myself...."did anyone ever doubt that he would be?!??" 😉
Until next time.........

2017 Annual Appeal
North Shore Horse Rescue and Sanctuary
The
end of 2017 is an important time for our rescue’s growth and history. Fifteen years of focus and determination have
led us to this year’s exciting news and invitation. We are purchasing a farm in Calverton
securing a forever home for the rescues, sanctuary horses, boarders, dogs, cats
and chickens. This reward for our cause
is literally 1.9 miles from our present location.
This
year’s “ASK” invites you to become a yearly member of our rescue by signing
onto our membership program supporting permanency. Your dollars will support such projects as
farm relocation, barn building, building run-in sheds, fencing for paddocks,
creation of communal stations such as the “Garden of Emotions”, “Pool of
Reflections”, “The Cornerstone of Horse Sense” and “Canter Way – the path of
Giving”.
We
are developing a Membership based organization where as members we “Give back”.
By appointment you and your family share private time together with our
animals, in a retreat like setting providing another wonderful place to explore
on the North Fork.
Spring of 2018 we look forward to welcoming
members to our permanent home built by the support of our community of friends
and donors. Each membership buys you a
mini vacation spot each time you step into the world of the horse.

We're On The Move!!
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: 11/7/17
The World of Horse Rescue
North Shore Horse Rescue and Sanctuary
www.northshorehorserescue.org
Baiting Hollow, NY: The Pioneers for Permanency
It all started 15 years ago with a stroke of a pen and a signature marking the humble beginnings of a horse farm destined to enter the world of horse rescue.
Not much is known about the particular history of horse rescues, but its safe to say that horses have forged their way into a bond with humans since the beginning of time. Thanks to Henry Bergh in 1866 who publicly reprimanded a cart driver for whipping his horse the modern-day American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), set the groundwork to expose the plight of animals. Today, with the help of advocates and not for profit organizations, awareness has been raised about animal cruelty.
Over 40 horses have graced the paddocks of North Shore Horse Rescue and Sanctuary over eight years. The owners Laurel Palermo and Thomas Renzetti celebrate their efforts to rescue rehabilitate and find suitable forever homes for the horses in their care. As horses derive their very essence from inclusion in a herd, this small rescue honored them by creating a communal environment in which to heal from the loss of their homes, fellow horses and horse families. This operation took place on land leased to North Shore Horse Rescue. This situation carried with it rent increases and many restrictions on raising money.
As the story evolved from humble beginnings the organization is now at the point in its history to be strong enough to provide for its sanctuary herd and those horses waiting to be helped, a permanent home deep in the heart of Riverhead. Over a substantial span of time a small band of pioneers led the effort to find a forever home for this operation, which now includes a rehabilitative arm for humans. It is believed by many native tribes that all animals are great teachers.
The Board of Directors extends special thanks and recognition to the official band of “Pioneers for Permanency” for their tireless efforts and generosity in making our search a reality. This groups’ ability to communicate with each other was one of the most valuable skills we learned from this process. More importantly, in our daily work with horses we all developed through their role modeling the importance of the relationship we created.
The Pioneers will be forever memorialized in a carving to be installed in the new barn of our new home.
